A UNIQUE art exhibition showcasing sculptures created by serving and former military personnel will open at St George's Hall on Friday.

The exhibition called Art of Recovery is the result of ground-breaking art project Bravo 22 Company and has been brought together by the Royal British Legion.

Led by professional sculptor Al Johnson, the group of servicemen and women have been learning new skills to improve their wellbeing.

Some of them have physical injuries, others struggle with PTSD and a variety of mental health challenges.

Al, who is also director of art for Bravo 22 Company said: “This has been life-changing for some of our veterans.

"Each piece of work is unique to its creator and tells a different story of recovery; from a painful memory to worries about civilian life or injuries that can’t be physically seen.”

This special exhibition of life-sized sculptures will explore the theme of recovery, will be on show from 6 to 19 September from 9.30am to 5pm.

This first ever Liverpool exhibition follows four weeks of art workshops with local ex-service men and women and their families at The Bridewell Studios and Gallery to create the life-size sculptures.

Gillian McKinnon, area manager for the Royal British Legion, said: “Through art, the project aims to improve participants’ self-awareness, confidence, self-esteem and motivation to help to move them along their individual recovery pathway. These rookie artists have been given a platform to express themselves.

“This is just one of the ways we are using your donations to help support our Armed Forces community in Merseyside.”

Entry to the exhibition will be free.
