THE Birkenhead tunnel will be partially closed due to the removal of the Churchill Way flyover in Liverpool.
Merseytravel confirmed that the Queensway tunnel will be closed for drivers travelling from Birkenhead to Liverpool from 7pm on Friday, September 6 to 6am on Monday, September 9.
It will be open for drivers travelling from Liverpool to Birkenhead.
The closures are due to the deconstruction of the Churchill Way flyover which connects Lime Street to Dale Street and Tithebarn Street.
Beginning on Monday, September 2, the first phase sees the taking down of three footbridges that sit underneath the two flyovers and are used to access Liverpool John Moore's University Byrom Street campus.
It is due to take two to three weeks for contractors Graham to complete and will see a series of phased weekend road closures of Byrom Street and then Hunter Street.
Once removed the focus will then swing to the removal of the flyovers which are more than 240m in length each.
The flyover dismantling will also run on Friday, September 20 to Monday, September 23 and then Friday, October 4 to Monday, October 7 which will mean the Birkenhead tunnel will once again be shut for Liverpool bound traffic.
