A BRAND new sensory centre is set to open in Beechwood to offer a calm and secure place for people with learning difficulties or sensory impairments.

Created by Sinead Holden, The Sensory Shack, based at Unit 16 Beechwood Drive, aims to help all ages and abilities to "make sense of their senses."

It will offer open and single sessions plus group bookings and offers help through special lighting, music and objects.

The self-funded project will open on Friday, August 9 - but need Globe readers help.

Sinead hopes to raise £5,000 to be able to buy hoists, an adult changer and a disability air mattress.

She told the Globe: "We are opening The Sensory Shack at the beginning of August and it will be a safe and relaxing space for the most vulnerable members of our community.

"In The Sensory Shack we will have a music and large activity room plus a sensory room and we want to empower carers plus help to soothe trauma though play and relaxation.

"We are a community interest company and we are passionate about delivering simple sessions both individually and in groups to traumatised or special needs adults and children to enable them to go onto a more balanced and productive life.

"By providing this service we aim to break the deadly cycle of trauma and mental health issues that left untreated can lead to antisocial behaviour, drug and alcohol abuse, criminal activity, violence and homelessness.

"We will provide a non oppressive, calm and happy secure zone for people to be free from judgement and discrimination."
