The number of Wirral parks and green spaces to be recognised in the annual Green Flag Awards has risen once again.

27 locations in the borough have now been nationally recognised by Keep Britain Tidy – up from 26 last year – and once again Wirral has more Green Flags than any other local authority in the whole of the Northwest region.

The awards are given to the country’s best run and maintained parks and green spaces.

Landican Cemetery is the new name on the roll of honour for 2019 and the council says its award – along with all the others – is "testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff and members of the public who volunteer their time to maintain these green spaces to an exceptional standard."

Along with its Green Flag award, Birkenhead Park has once again retained its Green Heritage status for its work on keeping the grade I listed parks historic characteristics at such a high standard.

Cllr Julie McManus, cabinet member for community services, said: “Once again this outstanding result showcases Wirral as home to some of the country’s best parks and open spaces. I’m immensely proud of our parks as I’m sure residents are too.

“Each year our parks are getting better and this recognition is testament to this. None of the Green Flags would have been possible without the time, hard work and complete dedication of council staff and volunteer and Friends groups.

"They work together day in and day out to keep our parks to the high standard they are for all to enjoy.”

The Green Flag awards are announced in July each year and are timed to coincide with the annual Love Parks Week.
