AN annual football tournament in memory of a brave 10-year-old has raised more than £1,500 for the Claire House bereavement team.

Young footballer Cole Breadner was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, while he was in year six at Prenton Primary School and underwent gruelling treatment.

Tragically, 16 weeks after his diagnosis Cole passed away on February 16, 2014.

After his death Cole's family received 'fantastic' support from the bereavement team at Claire House.

In order to give something back to the team, both Cole's family and school decided to organise a football tournament called Cole's Cup.

Now six years later, Cole's Cup continues to bring together school's from across Wirral who raise cash for Claire House.

Cole's mum Jackie told the Globe: "Losing Cole was absolutely devastating and something we will never get over.

"He was so bright and full of life and lit up any room he walked into.

"As a family we were seeking help to support Cole’s two younger brothers Lincoln and Korey as we were all struggling with coming to terms with Cole’s death.

"A family friend put us in touch with the bereavement team at Claire House.

"I cannot praise the Bereavement Team enough as they have been fantastic for our family.

"They provide counselling for both children and parents and sibling events throughout the year."

Wirral Globe:

Winners of Cole's Cup St George's Primary School

This year, 20 teams managed to raise more than £1,500 for the charity and St George's Primary School were crowned the winners.

Jackie added: "It’s a great event that brings so many children together.

"We would like to thank Glenavon Football Club who provide the goals, Ian Kenyon from Wirral Radio for announcements and music and Mr Currie of Prenton Primary and Mr Murphy of Liscard Primary who contact the schools to promote the tournament.

"A special mention to Mr Smith of Woodchurch High School who brings Year 9 pupils to referee the games plus the teachers and parents who all helped out on the day.

"It was another great success."
