HUNDREDS of children will have access to meals and activities in Birkenhead this summer holiday as the Globe-backed Feeding Birkenhead, Supporting Wirral programme begins next week.
Covering areas such as Rock Ferry, Tranmere, Prenton and Wallasey the Feeding Birkenhead, Supporting Wirral programme aims to ensure children who may otherwise go without food and activities during the holidays are able to eat a decent meal each day and take part in games, arts, crafts and sports.
During last year's summer break Feeding Birkenhead, Supporting Wirral served 10,000 meals and arranged activities for 888 children across Birkenhead.
It is believed that due to a larger programme this year even more children will be helped.
Frank Field MP, who set up the campaign, told the Globe: "Feeding Birkenhead, Supporting Wirral has set a blueprint for the rest of the country to follow, by ensuring as many children as possible, regardless of their circumstances, are able to enjoy the school holidays and not have to go without food or memorable activities.
"We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the volunteers and community workers who, time and again, provide this service with such dedication for many hundreds of children across the town."
The scheme follows Feeding Birkenhead, Supporting Wirral’s recent distribution of 80,000 breakfast servings supplied by His Church among 27 schools and community groups.
