AN investigation has been launched following an attempted cash machine theft from Sainsbury's in Prenton.

Emergency services were called at around 2.20am on Sunday, July 14 following reports that the alarm on Sainsbury's Woodchurch Road store had been activated.

On arrival officers found that the would-be thieves had damaged the shop and gained access before running away when the alarm began.

Detective inspector Laura Lamping said: “Our initial enquiries lead us to believe that this was a failed attempt to steal the ATM machine and an investigation is underway to find those responsible.

"Thankfully, we believe no one was injured during this incident, however, attempts such as this are reckless and can be extremely dangerous.

“If you saw or heard anything suspicious in the area in the early hours or yesterday, or if you have CCTV or dashcam which may have captured something, let us know.

"Any information, no matter how small, could prove vital in putting those involved before the courts."
