A MURDERER who stabbed a fellow inmate at HMP Risley to death has been caught carrying another blade in prison.

Adrisse Gray stabbed and killed Stephen O’Donnell on the E-wing of Risley prison in January, plunging a shank into his 33-year-old victim’s chest.

The 24-year-old, of no fixed address, is believed to have used a metal strip from a broom which had been sharpened in order to attack his fellow prisoner in a shower block after the pair had argued about a DVD player.

Gray admitted murdering Mr O’Donnell during a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court in March.

But only five days after pleading guilty, he was caught with a ‘sharpened piece of metal with a cloth handle’ in his cell at HMP Altcourse.

He appeared at Liverpool Magistrates Court via video link last week, where he admitted possession of an offensive weapon in a prison.

Gray – a convicted burglar from the Manchester area with no previous record of violence – will be sentenced for this offence and for Mr O Donnell’s murder at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, July 19.

Mr O'Donnell, from Stockport, was described as a ‘lovely man who was adored by his family and friends’ in the wake of his death earlier this year.

In a statement, his family said: “Our hearts are broken at the loss of our beloved Stephen - he was a lovely man who was adored by his family and friends.

“He didn’t deserve to be taken from us in this way, but nobody can take away the memories that we have of him which we will always treasure.”

A number of members of Mr O’Donnell’s family were present as Grey admitted his murder.

Defence barrister Richard Littler told the court in March that his client has ADHD and is prone to ‘impulsivity and mood swings’, and that the fatal stabbing – which was captured on CCTV – had followed an argument concerning a DVD player.

Police confirmed that Mr O’Donnell – who was serving a five-year sentence for grievous bodily harm – was stabbed once at around 6.15pm on Tuesday, January 22, with what was described as an ‘improvised weapon’.

Mr O’Donnell was able to make his way to his cell in order to raise the alarm and was rushed to Warrington Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly before 8pm.

Speaking in March, investigation lead detective inspector Nigel Reid said: “Gray has pleaded guilty to murder and in doing so has spared Stephen’s family the ordeal of having to sit through a trial.

“Our thoughts remain with them at this incredibly difficult time and we continue to support them throughout this process.

“A dedicated team of detectives have been working as part of this investigation to build a case and secure justice for Stephen and his family.

“I hope that this outcome provides them with some comfort.”
