CHAMPIONS of Europe Liverpool FC will visit Prenton Park on Thursday evening, as Tranmere Rovers gear up for life in League One with a pre-season friendly against the Premier League giants.

Jurgen Klopp's triumphant Reds will be making the trip across the river for the fourth successive season, as ties between the two clubs grow ever stronger.

The match is likely to be a sell-out, with less than 1,000 tickets still available today – a welcome boost to the Prenton Park coffers.

Micky Mellon will have the opportunity to hand maiden home appearances to a clutch of new signings, following a busy couple of weeks in the transfer market.

Darren Potter, Stefan Payne, Corey Blackett-Taylor, Calum Woods and George Ray will all be in contention for home debuts as new-look Rovers get a first run out in front of the Super White Army.

Tranmere's refreshed squad has already had one match together behind closed doors, losing 2-1 to Livingston at the end of a week-long training camp at St Andrews University in Scotland.

Striker Paul Mullin – who will be hoping to fill the boots vacated by James Norwood this season – scored Rovers' only goal.

It was an intense week for the group, with Micky Mellon inflicting triple training sessions on his players most days.

The bulk of Liverpool's squad returned to pre-season training on Saturday at Melwood, but their much-lauded attacking triumvirate of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino will be absent from Thursday’s encounter, due to their respective involvement in the African Cup of Nations and the Copa America.

But it's Tranmere that the Super White Army will be focused on and the success of achieving a remarkable double promotion has resulted in the purchase of over 4,200 season tickets ahead of the new season.

In addition to the Liverpool match, Rovers will play two more preseason friendlies at Prenton Park, against Stoke City and Walsall on July 20 and 27 respectively.

Sandwiched in-between is a trip to Carlisle United on July 23.

Tickets are available for all home matches online from trfctickets.co.uk where you can also purchase a season ticket for the forthcoming season.
