STAFF at a local health trust came together to celebrate the career of a man who has given 48 years of service to the NHS.

Colin Jones, based at Bowmere Hospital in Chester, celebrated the culmination of an incredible nursing career amongst colleagues and friends at a special get together, organised by staff.

Together, they enjoyed sharing memories of his time working for Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CWP), and also some tea and cake.

A hugely popular member of staff, he first began working in the NHS on September 8, 1970 as a cadet. More recently, he has been working in the Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) team.

Among the many qualities Colin was admired for were his skills, knowledge and, most importantly, his empathy towards those accessing our services at the trust. Staff also commented on his sense of humour and positive attitude as having an inspirational effect on both staff and those he cared for.

Speaking at the retirement party, Colin was clearly moved by the reception he received.

He said: “Having so many people come here today means a lot. I haven’t wanted to do anything else but be a nurse since I was 13, and I’ve been in the career 48 years, but everyone has to leave sometime!”

Colin continued: “Witnessing the opening of Bowmere Hospital was a particular highlight of my time with CWP, and working with Chris Jones on nursing administered ECT is something I will always be proud of.”

Leading the tributes to Colin was CWP director of nursing, therapies and patient partnership, Avril Devaney. She was full of praise for a kind-hearted and diligent long-time worker for the health service.

She said: “Colin has made a huge contribution to mental health nursing over the last 48 years. As one of our first modern matrons, Colin ensured that people received the best care possible. He has led by example and is highly thought of by patients and colleagues. We wish him well in his retirement."
