I REPLY to the letter from Alan Keating about TV licences for the over 75 year olds.
This concession was introduced by Gordon Brown in a previous Labour Government and was funded by the Government as part of its care of older people.
This Conservative Government stated that the concession should continue, but be paid for, and administered, by the BBC.
This places a huge financial burden on the BBC which would cause a drastic reduction of services.
The BBC is an independent broadcaster answerable to the public via a system of Governance; unlike other broadcasters who are simply accountable to shareholders and owners.
The problem here is that, yet again, this Conservative Government is blaming others for the negative consequences of its policies.
Those who find that they no longer benefit from the concession should remember that responsibility lies not with the BBC but with this Government.
