PASSENGERS are facing cancellations after a train broke down at Birkenhead Central.

Rail services on the Chester and Ellesmere Port Lines have been suspended between Rock Ferry and Liverpool after a train broke down at Birkenhead Central.

A replacement bus service was in place between Hamilton Square and Rock Ferry.

Passengers were urged to use the New Brighton and West Kirby services to travel to Liverpool and Hamilton Square.

Disruption was expected to last until 3pm today (Thursday, June 27) but some later services may also be subject to delays..

In a statement, Merseyrail said: "This morning the 5.39am train from Hooton became stuck at Birkenhead Central statuion due to a seized wheel.

"Trains with this fault need specialist equipment to remove it from the line, and a team are on site to carry out the removal.

"A replacement bus service is operating between Hamilton Square and Rock Ferry and customers are being advised to utilise the New Brighton and West Kirby services to travel between Liverpool stations and Hamilton Square.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused our passengers and we are working hard to get services up and running as soon as possible."
