TRANMERE Rovers have signed Crewe Alexandra captain George Ray on a two-year-contract as preparations for their League One campaign continue.

The 25-year-old centre back has a wealth of experience in the EFL and has played 150 professional games so far, 70 of those coming in Sky Bet League One.

A former Welsh U21 international, Ray was over the moon to sign on the dotted line for Micky Mellon's side.

He said: "I'm buzzing, I'm absolutely delighted to be here, and I can't wait to get going.

"Tranmere have done really well over the last couple of seasons and when I spoke to the manager, he told me he wants to go again.

"He is hungry, and I am hungry, so hopefully as a team we can have another successful season."

Manager Mellon added: "We are looking forward to welcoming George into the group.

"The signing of George is another part of our recruitment plan as we get ready for life back in League One.

"With keeping Manny (Monthe) at the Club, we have a great central partnership as part of a defensive base which developed last season and was the basis for many positive results.

"George has a great pedigree at this level, having made nearly half of his career appearances so far in the third tier.

"We have been working very hard in order to find the right players who fit the criteria for what we are looking for at Tranmere Rovers Football Club and we will be hoping to strengthen the squad further over the next few days."
