This will be the end of cinema in Birkenhead apart from the town hall cinema which was part of the long-gone Wirral Museum.

Not so long ago, Globe readers will remember the beautiful Plaza on Borough Road - home to Ralph Readers Scout Gang Shows.

Who can forget the magnificent Ritz - showplace of the North on Claughton Road with great shows organised by the famous manager Mr Bill Boht?

As a reminder of the cinema past - we still have the Gaumont building which replaced the Park Cinema opposite the entrance to Birkenhead Park and still has the handprints of the actress Nova Pilbeam on the pavement outside.

Next to the site of the now sadly missed Empire is the "Super" - remembered in later years as the Majestic Ballroom frequented by the Beatles.

What started this all off ?

The first film show outside of London at the famous Argyle Theatre in 1896.
