THE family of a Henllan teenager have successfully completed a gruelling week long challenge to support her in her battle with bone cancer.

Ysgol Glan Clwyd pupil Alisha Hoyles was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in March following a visit to the doctor for what she thought were growing pains in her left knee.

To mark Alisha's 15th birthday on Saturday, June 15, uncles Stewart and Kevin Hoyles and Andrew Smart arrived in Prestatyn to mark the end of a tough 177-mile trek of Offa's Dyke started in Chepstow on Saturday, June 8 alongside family friend Carl Jones.

Alisha's cousin, Corrina Edwards, from Denbigh, said: "This was a massive challenge for them all. They aimed to raise as much money as possible because Alisha's parents are travelling to and from the hospital and unable to work.

"Alisha joined in from Prestatyn High Street and she sat with family and friends afterwards and celebrated her birthday.

"The hardest part for them was having to cover the mileage very day, but they remembered the reason why the they’re doing it and kept laughing all the way.

"I can personally say I’m astonished at how high in spirits they were despite the fact they had sore knees, blistered feet and had not stopped for seven days."

The five-strong group have rallied around Alisha with the hope of raising money to help the family during her 10 sessions of intense chemotherapy in Alder Hay Children’s Hospital, Liverpool.

Following her current course of treatment, Alisha will undergo leg and knee reconstruction in Birmingham in the hope of saving her leg, before another 20 sessions of chemotherapy at Alder Hay.

Ms Edwards added: "During the recent sessions of chemo, Alisha has struggled with ulcers in her mouth, throat and gut, caused by mucositis. She's also had a bronchoscope camera check her breathing tubes in her lungs and to take samples of the fluids to see how to treat the chest infection which she has picked up.

"But her attitude is strong and she is so witty, determined and inspirational for such a young person.

"Alder Hay hospital has also been a phenomenal place in which continues to provide the best treatment and support to Alisha and her family."

The completion of the trek sits alongside numerous fundraisers conducted by Alisha's family, which has also seen them exceed a £2,500 goal on crowdfunding site Just Giving to raise £4,640.

In May, a group of her cousins and sister taking part in the Pretty Muddy race in Llaw, Wrexham in May and a sponsored head shave involving her father, grandad, uncles, cousins and family friends.

The family will also host a charity bingo and live music night on behalf of Alisha at the Packet House Pub in Greenfield on Friday, June 28 at at 6.30pm.
