MORE than 500 walkers had a sparkle in their step as they completed a charity stroll in Chester.

The 5km Chester Sparkle Walk, sponsored by Bristol Myers Squibb, was held on Friday, June 14 in aid of Backford charity the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.

Hundreds of walkers set off from Grosvenor Park and finished at the city's Amphitheatre.

Before they set off at 10.30pm, walkers were put into the ‘sparkling’ mood with music, flashing bunny ears and jewellery.

Stephen Robert, one of the walkers, said: “It was a superbly organised event with a volunteer on every corner to guide us around the walk with all the major road crossing points covered as well.”

Sue Swain, another walker, said: “Thanks to everyone for their hard work, before, during and after the event. It was a fantastic night from start to finish!”

Justin Caroe, community fundraiser, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the turnout for the event this year with people of all ages coming together to raise money for the Hospice.”

Caroline Siddall, director of income generation, said: “We would like to thank all of our volunteers and staff for keeping everyone safe during the event. We would also like to thank Bristol Myers Squibb who have sponsored the event this year and also had a team of walkers.”

The event has now completed its second successful year and has become a fixture in the Chester city centre summer calendar by taking people around the city’s iconic landmarks at night.

Sponsorship is still being received and the total amount raised will be announced soon on the Hospice’s social media channels.
