MERSEYSIDE Wing Air Cadets held an awards evening to honour the hard work, effort and achievements of the Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers.

The first of what will be an annual awards ceremony was held at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool as a way to thank those who have given their time and developed the skills geared towards providing the opportunities and activities that are available to all the Royal Air Force Air Cadets across Merseyside and Cheshire, including Ellesmere Port.

Among the guests for the evening was the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside Mr Mark Blundell, who presented many of the awards along with other Royal Air Force and Wing Staff Officers.

The awards were to commemorate the significant achievements that have been made over the last three years, including appointments as Civilian Instructors, Senior Non-Commissioned Officers, Officers and to Squadron Commander positions, as well as long service awards for time spent involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme which on this occasion ranged from five up to thirty-five years of service.

The final awards were for the Wing Commanders Commendation Certificate for those whose actions have been above and beyond those expected of them as Cadet Forces Volunteers.

The event concluded with a presentation in honour of those members of Merseyside Wing Staff who are no longer with us having passed away over the recent years, whose dedication to their Squadrons and the Air Cadets has been greatly missed by those who knew them, resulting in a standing ovation from all present in their memory and in support of their families and friends, many of whom were present for the evening.

Following the presentation of the awards, Officer Commanding Merseyside Wing, Wing Commander Chris Ashworth RAFAC, spoke of his great pride in the Wing and of the Staff who have given freely of their time to make the Wing such a triumph. Overall it was a successful and rewarding evening that was enjoyed by all, with many looking forward to next years awards evening already.

The Royal Air Force Air Cadets is open to all young people ages 12 (Year 8) to 18 and offers the opportunity for Cadets to experience many areas including Flying, Gliding, Target Shooting, Leadership, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, visits and camps to active RAF Stations across Europe and much more.
