AROUND 300 youngsters from across Merseyside are set to come together for a special one-off event ahead of this year's Vitality Netball World Cup.

Sponsored by Liverpool ONE, the Vitality Netball World Cup Legacy's North West School Tournament will take place on Thursday, June 13 and will unite pupils from across the area as each school represents different countries competing in this year's main event.

More than 30 schools from Wirral and Liverpool will compete in the tournament at Liverpool Tennis Centre at Wavertree Sports Park.

The winning teams will be recognised as the Netball Legacy World Cup Winners for their age groups.

Netball development officer at England Netball, Louise Moss said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be bringing the Vitality Netball World Cup to Liverpool and there’s already an incredible buzz and excitement as it draws closer.

“The school tournament is a fantastic opportunity for local pupils to get involved, be a part of the run-up and develop their talents on the netball court.

"We’ve had a great response from Merseyside schools – and beyond – signing up and we’re now raring to go with the tournament!

"As a team sport, netball can help young girls develop their confidence and build many transferable skills that can be applied in various fields.

"And, the legacy of having the Netball World Cup in Liverpool starts with offering new opportunities, such as this school tournament, to youngsters.

"We’re grateful to Liverpool ONE for funding this opportunity for so many youngsters to get involved.”

The event will be split into four age categories for girls and boys in school years five to eight.

It will mark the beginning of Liverpool ONE's Summer of Champions events programme offering free family fun to visitors this summer with Liverpool ONE hosting the official Vitality Netball World Cup Fan Park between July 12 to 21.

Donna Howitt, marketing director at Liverpool ONE said: “Our Summer of Champions schedule of events is all about encouraging everyone, regardless of age or ability, to get active, so we’re thrilled to be supporting the Vitality Netball World Cup Merseyside School Tournament.

“We have so much young sporting talent right here in Merseyside, so it’s an amazing opportunity for schools to come together, enjoy a whole day of netball and, of course, compete for the winning title!”
