A 15-YEAR-OLD student has been crowned the best Young Woodturner of the Year in a national competition.

Nathanael Griffiths, a pupil at West Kirby School and College, won the title at the annual British Woodturner of the Year awards for the under 18 category.

Over the last couple of years Nathanael has developed his interest and talent in woodturning and has even created a workshop at home.

He now sells his woodwork creations, such tablet speakers and crafted bowls, through local fairs and events such as Wirral Festival of Firsts.

Nathanael, who has autism, hopes to progress this talent as a career.

His mum Sarah told the Globe: "A different approach to his education ‘thinking outside the box’, using his woodturning and photography special interests to engage him in school has enabled Nathanael’s progress and huge personal achievement.”
