WIRRAL'S running man is set to take on his biggest challenge yet - running from John O'Groats to Land's End in 17 days.

John Hammond will begin the gruelling 874 mile run on Friday, May 24 - aiming to take on between 40 miles to 60 miles each day.

He is embarking on this huge feat to raise £5,000 for five local charities: Mind; DIPG Awareness in memory of Edie Molyneux and Lucy Moroney; The Paul Lavelle Foundation; Charlie's Chance and Claire House.

All these charities hold a special place in John's heart, who has previously fundraised for them before.

Over the last few years John has set himself many challenges in a bid to raise cash for causes desperately in need of backing and has been recognised through honours such as Pride of Britain regional finalist and Fundraiser of the Year Award.

More recently, he has got behind Cancer Research's Race for Life campaign which is urging more men to take part in the event.

John told the Globe: "I’ll be attempting to run 874 mile run from John O'Groats - Land's End starting Friday, May 24.

"I’ll be hopefully running between 40 and 60 miles a day for the full 17 days. It’s something I’ve thought about for a few good years now so it was a case of now or never.

Wirral Globe:

"It will definitely be the toughest challenge I have ever taken on and the chance of failure is quite high but I’ll be giving it everything I’ve got.

"I have had unbelievable amount of help from friends getting it all organised helping me with costs of accommodation, kit, trainers etc,.

"A huge thank you to everyone that has helped so far and a special mention to Arrowe Financial who have helped out so much.

"I also have a lot of support along the way with Nissan Liverpool kindly supplying a car for the first 10 days where I’ll be supported by my good friends Sue and Stewart Foster.

"As always I’ll be raising as much money as possible and this time I have chose five brilliant local charities who all mean something to me, DIPG Awareness, Claire House, The Paul Lavelle Foundation, Charlie’s Chance and Mind.

"Hopefully I can get through this wee run and raise not just a lot of money but also lots of awareness."
