THERE is a friendly attraction at New Brighton's Vale Park in the form of a statue commemorating a cute maritime creature.

Betty the Seal was put in pride of place this week by local community arts champions Carl and Rose Leckey and Vale Park volunteers.

Within minutes of her arrival Betty was surrounded by fans of all ages and is sure to be a big draw for 'seal selfies' - just like the appeal of the popular mermaid trail which have inspired Wirral residents and tourists alike.

But who is Betty?

Legend has it that her grandmother - also called Betty - set up home at the garden area that was located there before the promenade arrived.

Local residents fed Betty fish dinners and cared for her until one day she swam away and never returned.

Carl told the Globe: "We decided to celebrate this wonderful story by introducing the grand daughter to Wirral.

"I want to thank the park rangers for their invaluable help in putting Betty in her new home."

An official unveiling ceremony with the Town Crier is planned when the weather gets warmer, says Carl who in true trail-blazing style organised the independently-funded attraction.
