A GROUP of walkers is taking part in a 200-mile to raise awareness of secondary cancer in memory of a friend who died from the disease.

The 'Big Stompers' from Wallasey will walk from the West Coast of England to the East Coast of England later this month.

Along the way they will hand out fliers, talk to fellow walkers and raising awareness.

And they need Globe readers to support them.

The group was co-founded in 2016 by Iain Turner, whose wife Laura was diagnosed with cancer.

Its aim was to raise awareness of secondary cancer through walks and charity events to help the couple make memories with their two young boys and themselves as Laura fought the disease.

Sadly, Laura lost her battle the following year.

Looking ahead to the 200-mile trek, group spokesman Saul Murphy told the Globe: "We will be doing it over a two-week period and we are asking for as many people as possible to join us in the second week. The more the merrier.

"It is not common knowledge that once women have fought breast cancer there is a 30% chance it will return as incurable secondary cancer.

"We want to make people aware of this fact.

"We want to tell people about the signs and symptoms to look out for.

"There is no cure for secondary cancer but by knowing the signs and checking on a regular basis hopefully we can help people to be diagnosed quicker thus prolonging the time that they have with friends and loved ones."

The group began its Bigstomp in 2016 with a series of walks and events from Leeds to Liverpool.

Saul said: "It was a huge success, so we decided to do another one in 2017.

"Unfortunately, a little after we completed the 2017 stomp, the beautiful Laura lost her battle with cancer and was finally set free of the pain and suffering.

"So now we are Stomping in her memory!

"In 2018, Laura's brother James walked 100km in a 24-hour period! Which was just amazing."

Saul trekked the Himalayas in 2018 in her memory and raised funds for a children's cancer charity.

Saul Murphy continued: "We are looking to raise money to cover the accommodation, food and transport costs of the core walking team of four people and the two support drivers."

Appealing to our readers for help, Saul added: "We are looking for help with either monetary donations, sponsorship, marketing/advertising, raffle prizes etc.

"If you think that you may be able to help us, then we would be hugely grateful.

"Thank you in advance for any help that you can give."
