A COMMUNITY bar in Liscard has been named Wirral Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) for a third year in succession.

The Lazy Landlord in Mill Lane was presented with its award certificate as customers cheered.

It also received an extra certificate for winning the award three times in a row.

The micropub, which opened in December 2014, is run by two brothers who grew up in Moreton – Lenny and Mike Henry.

Licensee Lenny, 67, a retired social worker, said: "We are chuffed to win this again.

"It's a tribute to our regular customers, who make us what we are – a genuine community pub, packed with characters.

"I'd like to say a big thanks to CAMRA for this award, and for their continuing good work in promoting real ale and trying to keep pubs open, at a time when so many are under such pressure."

Helping Lenny run The Lazy Landlord, is brother Mike, 64, a former engineer on the Mersey Ferries, and their barman Joe Bryan, 32, from Wallasey.

The micropub, based in a former shop premises, was given its name by Lenny, after a tenant in a house he owned had teased him about being slow and 'lazy' in getting repairs done.

The bar opens daily, except for Tuesdays, and calls last orders at 10pm.

It sells a variety of real ales and always tries to have at least two local beers available; often Brimstage and Peerless.

It also sells wine, chosen by Lenny's wife, Bev, and real cider, but it doesn't sell lager or spirits.

The 'Lazy', as most regulars call it, also hosts meetings of a local allotment society, holds poetry recitals by local poets (Pop-Up Poets) and is home to a board games club and a group which discusses literature.

Each Monday, regulars can help themselves to snacks such as pie and quiche slices, provided by the pub, and on Wednesdays similar snacks are brought in by customers.

Anyone fancying a bite to eat simply puts a donation to the pub’s charity tin for Stick’n’Step, an organisation which aids children with cerebral palsy.

Presenting the Wirral Pub of the Year Award 2019, CAMRA’s Wirral chairman Gareth Owen said: "It is a rare and special thing that any pub receives this award, but especially in the case of the Lazy as it has now achieved an amazing hat-trick of victories."

But he added that having won for three years in a row now, the Lazy could not, under CAMRA rules, be considered for award again in 2020.
