WIRRAL West MP Margaret Greenwood has shown her support for an event which inspires people to take action in a bid to protect the planet.

Earth Hour, organised by World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), takes place this Saturday (March 30) between 8.30pm and 9.30pm UK time.

Pledges suggested by WWF might include restoring nature where we live, changing the way we eat, reducing the plastic we buy and turning washing to 30 degrees Celsius.

The event is held annually and in the past has seen the world's biggest landmarks including the Sydney Opera House, Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, and Edinburgh Castle switch off lights as a visual display of their commitment to our planet.

Margaret Greenwood MP pledged her support for the campaign during a launch in Parliament. She said: "I was really pleased to be able to meet with representatives from the World Wildlife Fund for Nature in Parliament to show my support for Earth Hour 2019.

"Earth Hour gives people around the world the opportunity to raise awareness of the major environmental challenges we are facing. I know from talking to people in Wirral West that there is real commitment locally to protect the natural world for this and future generations.

"Last year in the UK over 10 million people took part, along with over 7,000 schools, 1,700 youth groups, 400 landmarks and thousands of businesses and organisations.

"I would encourage anyone who might be interested in finding out more about Earth Hour to visit WWF’s website – www.wwf.org.uk/earthhour ”

Gareth Redmond-King, WWF’s Head of Climate Change, said: "We are delighted that MPs have added their voice to Earth Hour this year.

"Many of us feel powerless in the face of overwhelming threats to the planet.

"But when we all come together, we create a strong voice to change matters for the better."
