YOUNG people across Wirral are being invited to apply for a place on a citizenship programme.

The National Citizen Service (NCS) gives those aged 16 and 17 the chance to go on short breaks and gain work experience which can contribute towards university and job applications.

This year's scheme includes outdoor pursuits and the planning and implementation of an important social action project in their local community.

Since the programme began in Wirral 1,232 young people have taken part.

NCS is open to anyone who meets the age criteria and costs no more than £50 per pupil, which includes travel and accommodation for the outward bound element of the programme.

Bursaries are also available for qualifying applicants and Wirral Council is currently recruiting 39 casual posts to deliver the programme over the summer.

Cllr Phill Brightmore, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Recreation, said: "The National Citizen Service programme allows Wirral's young people to spend their holidays camping, learning and giving something back to their local area.

"It's a wonderful scheme which encourages a community-spirited outlook and where those who take part are guaranteed to make new friends and memories that will last a lifetime.

"Ensuring that young people are able to access leisure and cultural opportunities that also prepare them for the world of work is a key objective for Wirral Council.

"With so many places on this year's scheme, I would urge anyone who is thinking about taking part to apply as soon as possible because we know it will be very popular."

The scheme can be integrated with the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and with citizenship lessons.
