A SERVICE which helps Wirral residents quit smoking is set to exceed its target for another year running.

The news comes as a national report, published on Friday by public health charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and Cancer Research UK, found that 44% of local authorities no longer offer smokers the best support to kick the habit.

Last year, ABL Wirral, which supports smokers who want to stop, saw its highest quit rate since 2013/14 with more than 1,525 residents supported.

Elizabeth Woodworth, head of Smoking Cessation Services at ABL, said: “We are thrilled to see our footfall and quit rates increasing as more people access ABL’s services.

“ABL works in communities across the borough so this support is being offered right on your doorstep.

"I’d encourage anyone thinking about quitting get in touch.

"We can support you on your journey to a healthier life.”

ABL now hopes to surpass this figure once again this year.

Cabinet member for adult care and health Cllr Christine Jones said: “Supporting residents to quit smoking remains a major public health priority in Wirral, as evidenced by the borough’s continued investment in specialist support for those who need it.

"We’re putting our money where our mouth is to make smoking history in Wirral.”
