POLICE are appealing for information after Liverpool FC goalkeeper Shamal George was assaulted outside a bar.

The Wirral-born footballer, aged 21, received cuts to his face during the attack outside Red Door on Berry Street, Liverpool City Centre at around 2.05am on Saturday, March 9.

A 28-year-old man, believed to be Shamal's brother, was also assaulted inside the club and suffered facial injuries.

Both the men were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries.

In a statement, a Liverpool spokesman said: "Liverpool Football Club is shocked and appalled that Shamal and a family member have been subjected to such a terrible ordeal.

"As a club, we will offer Shamal and his family any support that they require.

"The matter is now in the hands of Merseyside Police and we will defer all enquiries to them. We would also urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

"Liverpool Football Club will make no further comment until it is appropriate to do so and, in the meantime, we would ask that Shamal and his family have their privacy respected."

Police are appealing to trace two men in connection with the incident.

One is white, of stocky build and was wearing a white t-shirt, the other was wearing a black jacket.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.
