A SEVERE warning for snow and ice has extended throughout the week.

The Met Office has extended its yellow weather warning for snow and ice across Merseyside and central England until Friday, February 1.

The first yellow warning was put in place from 12pm today (Tuesday, January 29) until 11am on Wednesday 30.

However further warnings have been put in place on Thursday, January 31 from 3pm until 12pm on Friday, February 1.

Due to clear skies at night, ice is likely to form on road surfaces so people are being warned to expect longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

Forecasters have told residents to expect up to 10cm of snow in some areas and are urging the public to be wary of ice on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Chief meteorologist Paul Gundersen said: “As the moist air from a weather system bringing storms to France clashes with the cold air sitting over the UK, it brings the chance of wintry showers and snow disruption to most parts.

“It’s not possible at this stage to be certain where exactly will see the worst impacts of any snow, but people need to be prepared for the possibility of disruption and make sure they check the forecast regularly.

“Areas of higher ground are most likely to see significant snowfall, so it’s particularly important to take extra care when planning and travelling in those places.”
