POLICE are appealing for more information after a man was shot in Birkenhead.

Merseyside Police received a call at around 5.45pm on Monday, January 21 after a man attended hospital with a gunshot wound to the buttock.

The man, aged in his 30s, was treated at hospital for his injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Officers are continuing to establish the exact circumstances of the incident including what caused the injury and the location of the shooting.

Detective inspector Jacky Fitzpatrick said: “We’re still in the early stages of this investigation and are looking to hear from anyone who saw or heard shots being fired at around 5.30pm on Monday in the Beechwood area of Birkenhead.

“We have not confirmed exactly where this incident happened, so are continuing to carry out house to house, CCTV and forensic enquiries to identify those involved.

"All information provided to us by members of the public will be acted on swiftly to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

“We have recovered a dark coloured Vauxhall Insignia car that we believe the victim was taken to hospital in but are keen to speak to anyone that also saw the car in the area around the time of the shooting as we believe this could help us piece together the exact details of what happened.

“Those using and carrying guns put themselves and others at risk and I’d urge anyone to think twice about the consequences having or firing a gun could cause.

"Officers continue to patrol the area to carry out enquiries and to provide reassurance, so please come and talk to us so we can investigate fully and make our communities safer.”
