PEOPLE are fuming at a “rotten, dangerous” fence opposite a nursery that no one is doing anything about.

It’s been warned that if the fence, which is on Groveland Road opposite the Harrison Day Nursery in Wallasey Village, isn’t fixed, there could be an accident.

It backs onto Wallasey Grove Road Station and currently has “nails sticking out” of it.

But according to a local councillor, no one will take responsibility for it.

Jayne Roberts, who lives close to the fence, said: “I believe other residents, over the years, have been trying to get to the bottom of who owns the fence on Groveland Road to no avail.

“It is now so rotten it’s dangerous. There are nails sticking out, it’s broken all the way along with sharp ends and is an absolute eyesore. It’s a ridiculous state of affairs that neither Merseytravel nor Wirral council will take responsibility and replace it. One of them must have erected it!”

Cllr Lewis says he has asked Merseytravel and Wirral council to repair the dilapidated fence, which bounds the station approach and car park, but they both told him it’s not their responsibility.

He added: “It’s time for both the council and Merseytravel to accept that this fencing, old and damaged as it may be, is there for a reason – mainly public safety. For neither to take any interest in repairing it shows a shocking lack of concern for pedestrians.

“A public authority must have installed this fencing – either Wirral council, the old Wallasey council or the public transport authority. It needs to be replaced, and quickly, before there is an accident and both authorities end up with a personal injury claim.”

A Merseytravel spokesman said: “We looked into the matter after Cllr Lewis raised the issue with us in December and advised him that whilst we are responsible for the land that sits within the station boundary, the area in question sits beyond this and therefore is outside of our control.

“We will however work with Network Rail, Merseyrail and Wirral Council to look to agree a resolution to this matter.”

A spokesman for Wirral Council said: “The land on which the fence is located in Groveland Road is unregistered and not in council ownership.

“However, as a gesture of goodwill the council recently carried out the cutting back of the trees on this land as they were interfering with the street lights.

“At the time we contacted local elected representatives and residents of adjacent properties to inform them of the work.

“The council is currently in contact with Merseytravel and others concerning the state of the fences.”
