A MAN is in hospital with a serious head injury after being assaulted by four yobs in Birkenhead.

Emergency services were called at around 2.55pm today (Monday, January 14) to the junction of Exmouth Street and Claughton Road following reports that something had been thrown at a black Jaguar car.

It is believed that the driver, a 49-year-old man, got out of the car and four males attacked him.

The driver sustained a serious head injury and was taken to hospital where police say, his condition is critical.

The incident occurred just metres away from where Prince Harry and his wife Meghan were visiting just a short time before.

Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) will be carrying out forensic examinations at the scene and officers will be examining CCTV footage from the area in a bid to identify those involved.

Officers will also be making enquiries at local businesses and speaking to local residents.

Detectives say they are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may have been there at the time.

One of the males is around 15 to 17-years-old, white, around 5ft 6in and was wearing a black jacket with grey tracksuit trousers and black trainers.

It's believed he was holding a stick.

The second is around the same age, white, around 5ft with ginger hair and was wearing a black coat, black trainers and black trousers.
