THE acclaimed Rubbish Shakespeare Company will revive its unique adaptation of Romeo and Juliet in a homecoming tour that starts at the Gladstone Theatre in Port Sunlight next month.

Aimed at ages four and upwards, it will be staged at the Greendale Road venue on Sunday, February 3, following success at the Edinburgh Fringe festival last August.

According to the show's producers, you can expect "an hour of multi-rolling, wigs and sausage rolls".

Artistic director Lee Hithersay said: "Full of spontaneity and slapstick humour, it tells the world's most famous love story in a novel and accessible way that appeals to all ages, but still importantly maintains the original language of Shakespeare, with a few "Oi you!"s thrown in for good measure.

"It's very important we can adapt the powerful message of a play like Romeo and Juliet for any audience.

"We are constantly finding new ways to engage with our audience, whether that be throwing sausage rolls at one of our actors, Alex, or presenting the Montagues and Capulets' rivalry."

Hailing from the North West, and with the artistic support of the Everyman & Playhouse, the Rubbish Shakespeare Company have broken into the professional touring theatre scene, whilst still keeping their roots in creative education very strong.

Their recent run at the Pleasance Courtyard's 'Above' space at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last August, resulted in audiences raving about them.

Audience member Ruth Christie said it was "Extremely silly and energetic but a treat for kids and also for the grown-ups."

Annabel Harrison added: "Amazing how much Shakespearean language you can retain in an adaptation suitable for small children."

Not only is the show a hit with the general public, but is critically well received as well, receiving 5* reviews and endorsements from BBC’s Simon Nelson, who said: “Your kids will love it, so will you”,

Comedian Lucy Porter said it was “100% amazing”

The Gladstone Theatre show on February 3 starts at 2.30pm.

Tickets are from the box office on 643 8757.
