A TEENAGER has been charged with aggravated vehicle taking, driving whilst disqualified and without insurance following a major incident in Birkenhead town centre.

Police confirmed today that the 16-year-old was arrested and a suspected stolen vehicle recovered following the incident on Friday.

At around 11.40am that day, police received a call reporting that a Mercedes had been stolen from an address in Prenton.

The car was spotted, at around 1.15pm, being driving dangerously in the area and pursued before it was abandoned in Borough Road, Birkenhead.

Police chased the occupants on foot with help from the National Police Air Support (NPAS) helicopter and the 16-year-old, from Birkenhead, was detained on Conway Street.

He was remanded on bail and appeared at Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates Court this morning.
