TRANMERE boss Micky Mellon says his side’s FA Cup third-round clash with Tottenham Hotspur will be a huge opportunity to "show the footballing world that the club is still here".

Mauricio Pochettino’s Premier League face Mellon’s squad for Friday’s match, in front of a sell-out crowd of around 13,000 at Prenton Park, that will be televised live on BT Sport.

Looking forward to the game during a press conference at the club’s Solar Campus training ground in Leasowe this afternoon, Micky Mellon said ties like this are what the FA Cup is all about.

He told the Globe: "The atmosphere will be electric; it will be Friday night. It’s party night anyway every Friday in Birkenhead, but it happens to have a game of football in the middle of it to add to the spice.

"We have absolutely nothing to lose, so we in good place and are excited about it. It will be a chance for the club to show the whole of the footballing world that Tranmere is still here, because we disappeared off the Football League radar for a wee while.

"It was important to remember that three years out of the Football League runs the risk of losing you generations of fans and you can stop being a big football club.

"But over the last three years, after trips to Wembley, big occasions like this and the promotion battles, we have seen that Tranmere is still here and has a fan base that, when called upon, can sell it within three hours.

"So, it's up to us as a business that we ensure we keep the momentum up going forward and games like that on Friday night will help that."

He continued: "We're coming to the end of a hectic period; five games in 14 days, which has been tough for us, but now we have this massive game at the end of it, against Tottenham.

"We're very excited and are looking forward to it.

"It’s about going out there and making sure you take part in the game.

"We'll get prepared in the best way that we can and know that it's a massive game for us and big, big ask, but we'll go out there and do the best we can and represent the club as we always do."

Mellon, who has appeared in many FA Cup ties for Rovers as a player, said: "It's a huge thing for the club to get involved in ties like this, it’s brilliant for us for a whole host of reasons; financially and for announcing that we are still here.

"It’s an exciting opportunity, but we’ll contain that excitement and will be very professional about it, because at the end of the day this is about Tranmere, but we’re looking forward to what should be a fantastic evening.

"It's going to great seeing the ground full. It will be the first time since we played Liverpool that we have been full. It will be great to see the ground bouncing."

Assessing tomorrow night's opponents, Mellon said: "They are a wonderful, team, full of internationals all through the group. We know that and respect that.

"Although we have to be realistic and say our chances are small, there are certain things we can do to increase that and have spoken about it in the last couple of days.

"We know it’s going to be tough, but this is the FA Cup.

"Because it’s been a bit relentless; five games in 14 days, we haven’t really had any time to have a massive build-up to the game or any opportunity to get overly excited. It's just come on and we have tried to get as much preparation as we can.”

Echoing the manager's determination, goalkeeper Scott Davies said: "We have nothing to lose and no fear, we respect them, but we have no fear, on any day, anything can happen in football and we have to believe that.

"Personally, I think nerves are good, I think when you’re not nervous, you’re not up for a game, it switches you on, so I think it is a good thing.

"We've got a group here who are experienced, albeit at the levels that we play at, we are experienced, we’ve played in big games, we've played in Play-Off Finals, so we’ll go into it with no fear and nothing to lose.

"We'll respect them, but we don’t fear them, we know what we are capable of and it is about making sure we concentrate on that.”

"Whoever plays, even their bench is stacked with international footballers, it will be great to challenge ourselves against them and in this game you never know.

"We've all been involved in big football games before, I think maybe with this, they are as good as they are, but when we turn up on the day it is just another game and we need to make sure we apply ourselves and give ourselves the best chance because like I said in this game you just never know.

"We do have a chance going into it, obviously they are favourites, but we will give ourselves every chance to get ourselves in the draw."
