Digging has been carried out without consent on a Llandudno landmark.

The North Wales Police Rural Crime Team posted a picture on Twitter which showed a hole had been dug at the Great Orme, which is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI), near Elephant's Cave.

The Rural Crime Team, on Twitter, said: "A digger has been working. Most work carried out on sites protected for nature (including here) requires consent from Natural Resources Wales.

"Do you know who was responsible for digging here?"

The team are now working with Natural Resources Wales to understand why this activity has occurred and who did it.

Natural Resources Wales said: "Sites like the Great Orme SSSI are protected in law due to their special habitat features, including their geology. It’s what makes them special, unique and valued.

"It is therefore against the law to carry out activities that may damage the features of a protected site (SSSI, SAC).

"NRW are working closely with NWP to understand why this activity has occurred and who did it."
