I THANK my local Conservative councillors for taking the time to have a small information pack delivered to the local residents about the issue of campervans staying overnight at the end of the promenade at Wallasey.

I am though still none the wiser as to what the problem actually is and have failed in several attempts in the past to get any response as to how many local residents are actually complaining.

If the problem is simply campervans staying overnight, then why not take a more positive and welcoming stance by offering facilities to the campers for a small charge like the French system of Aires?

Take a look at the stance taken by Craven District Council in the Yorkshire Dales that reserves a few spaces in a car park for overnight campervans and charges for them, with a limited stay of a few nights. Why discourage visitors to our lovely town?

If the problem is actually the few campervans that abuse people’s patience and stay semi permanently by the sailing club, then make the traffic regulation to fit them by limiting the length of stay to a few days.

Finally, I would like to point out that the planned parking restriction only covers the cul-de-sacs of Kings Parade and Coastal Drive.

What is there to stop the campervans from being parked overnight elsewhere on these roads, and perhaps more likely on coastal drive which has far less traffic than Kings Parade.

Come on councillors – can we have a bit of transparency as to exactly why this is being done and maybe a rethink to make the solution more positive and welcoming for campervan owners who will no doubt spend some money in Wallasey and New Brighton.

Bill Taylor,

Wallasey.
