A CHRISTMAS lights switch-on will launch a series of festive-themed events in Birkenhead town centre tomorrow.

Organised by Birkenhead’s Business Improvement District team along with support from Wirral Chamber of Commerce the switch-on in Grange Road is the start of a four-week Gift of Christmas campaign.

The event, starting at 4pm, promises something for everyone in the lead up to the 7pm switch-on of the town centre lights.

Hosted by Adam from Capital Liverpool's breakfast show, it will feature performances from The Merseyboys, a host of incredible talent from The Hive, The Rock Choir and plus much more,

In the four weeks from the switch-on until Christmas, a number of pop up 'Gifts' will appear in Grange Road, aiming to surprise shoppers.

Gemma Nichols, head of Birkenhead BID, said: "Through creating the Gift concept we are able to bring together our business community, residents and also offer an experience for visitors to come to Birkenhead.

"Our aim is, through programming a number of activities wrapped around a retail experience, we will increase footfall within the Town Centre.

"Throughout the campaign we will be working with our local independent businesses to promote the importance of the high street and ‘keeping it local’.

"Working with businesses located in Oxton Road, Grange Road West and Birkenhead Market to push the message of "use it or lose it."

Paula Basnett, chief executive of Wirral Chamber of Commerce and Chair of Birkenhead BID Steering Group said: "Christmas is a special time of year, through creating a campaign such as The Gift we are able to promote the importance of our local stronger and vibrant community across our businesses, residents and visitors alike.

"There is no greater gift than the gift of a stronger community.

"Wanting to make Birkenhead a better place resonates with us all, showing true community spirit and faith at this time of year is important."
