TRANMERE Rovers manager Micky Mellon is among local sports heroes honoured for their achievements.

He picked up the prestigious Wirral Sports Person award for 2018 during a ceremony at Hulme Hall in Port Sunlight.

Also taking home awards on the night were 'club of the year’ Upton Cricket Club and Freya Anderson from Wirral Metro Swimming Club, who picked up the outstanding achievement award for her success at the British European Championships.

Just this week, Freya has also been shortlisted for the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year award, which will be held on Sunday, December 16.

Other winners in Wirral included Andrew Waring from Birkenhead Athletics Club.

The event was opened by Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Geoffrey Watt.

  • Sports PE Dept of the Year : Ridgeway High School
  • Secondary School Girls Team of the Year: Prenton High School Girls cricket team
  • Secondary Boys School Team of the Year: Calday Grange Grammar School football team
  • Lifetime achievement: Peter Phelan – Wirral Amateur Boxing Association
