POLICE are appealing for information after a man was assaulted in Birkenhead.

Emergency services were called at around 1.20am on Sunday, October 14 following reports of an assault close to Sherlocks Wine Bar on Conway Street.

Detectives believe the victim, a man in his 20s, was assaulted after a altercation in the street.

The man was taken to hospital with a head injury.

Witness enquiries are ongoing to identify the offender who ran off before the emergency services arrived.

Detective inspector Nick Suffield said: "This was a serious assault and has left the victim with a head injury which is being assessed at hospital.

"Although we have spoken to some witnesses to the incident, I would urge anyone who was in the area, possibly waiting for taxis or leaving licensed premises at the time, to come forward with whatever you saw or know.

"We will do everything in our power to identify the person responsible and bring them to justice."
