AROUND 40 firefighters are dealing with a chemical spill at Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the North Road assembly plant at around 10.40am today (Thursday, September 13) following reports of an incident involving a liquid spill.

On arrival crews discovered a spill involving two chemicals which has been contained in the plant.

It is believed that the two chemicals had been 'accidentally combined.'

A road closure has been put in place on North Road and motorists are being urged to avoid the area.

An inner cordon has been set up at the premises for safety and neighbouring properties are being evacuated.

Residents living nearby are being urged to close their windows and doors as a precaution but it is not believed that there is any risk to the public.

There are not thought to be any injuries.

Two firefighters wearing specialist gas tight suits are inside the assembly plant to check the temperature inside.

Eight fire engines are in attendance alongside police officers who are assisting with the cordon as decontamination takes place.

More as we get it.
