PASSENGERS have been given the first glimpse of what the newly remodelled Liverpool Lime Street Station will look like when it reopens on Monday.

Network Rail have revealed a 3D virtual video which shows a 'fly through' of the station, explaining what work has been completed and the new platform layout.

The station's major eight week improvement works will come to an end this weekend and services will resume on Monday, July 30.

Network Rail’s London North Western route managing director Martin Frobisher said: “Remodelled, extended and widened platforms are vital to make room for more frequent, longer, more reliable trains carrying more passengers.

"This essential upgrade will serve the growing rail travel needs of the Liverpool City Region for generations to come.

“While we prepare to reopen the station, we’d like to say a big thank you to passengers for bearing with us during this upgrade, which is a key part of the Great North Rail Project.”

As part of the upgrade, two new platforms have been fully commissioned and other platforms have been remodelled, lengthened and widened.

The upgrades will mean an extra three services can come in or out of Lime Street every hour including new direct services to Scotland.

Extensive upgrades to signalling equipment and overhead line equipment have also been completed to boost capacity within the station.

Signalling control is in the final stages of being moved to the Manchester Rail Operating Centre.

This is to ensure reliable journeys for passengers and hopes to minimise delays.

Liam Robinson, transport portfolio holder for the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, said: "It's fantastic to see the progress that has been made over the last eight weeks for this major upgrade of Lime Street.

"These improvements are a major part of our Long Term Rail Strategy being put into practice and will help to meet the increasing demand for services from the station.

"We'd like to thank passengers for their patience and understanding during the works and look forwarding to them seeing the benefits that this upgrade will bring."

Further work will take place on Sunday, September 2 and Sunday, October 14 to complete further key upgrades and bring platforms 1 and 2 back into full use.

Lime Street’s transformation is a key part of the £340m railway investment in the Liverpool City Region, which sits within the Great North Rail Project.
