WALLASEY Rotary Club wants to thank local residents for their 'invaluable' support.

In June Wallasey Rotary Club held its final weekly meeting of the 'rotary' year and thanked all members and guests for their achievements in the past year.

As part of the year, members had pledged their support to the Seacombe community by raising cash for the children's centre, litter picking and creating Christmas hampers.

It is hoped that this support will continue for the Wirral 2020 project.

In a statement the club told the Globe: "During the year, the club was delighted to be able to support and sponsor the Mayor’s Celebration of spiritual, moral, social and cultural outcomes for children in 15 local primary schools.

"Elsewhere in the local community, they helped, amongst others, the Open Door Centre in Liscard, Hoylake Hospital Care Home, and Maggie’s Drop-in Centre at Clatterbridge Oncology Centre.

"Local young people participated in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and Youth Service Award Scheme, as well as taking part in the Rotary Young Musicians competition.

"In the local landscape, Rotarians planted 5,000 purple crocus bulbs and 210 young trees, most of them in local schools.

"Rotary is very active internationally and the Wallasey Club contributed towards the Rotary Foundation global charity, as well as continuing to support the fight against polio worldwide.

"They provide 'shelterboxes' for use in disaster relief operations worldwide, and continued support for the Tilinau Orphanage

in Malawi.

"We were also active in organising the Oldershaw Christmas Concert and the Senior Citizens Dinner at Mosslands School, and in many other activities with the local community.

"But the year was not all about 'service before self' as the Rotary motto goes, and members have enjoyed many social meetings, with speakers, quizzes and entertainment, as well as musical events, trips to the theatre and cinema, and voyages on local canals."

Typhoo Tea's Steve Barratt has now taken over as the new president of The Rotary Club Wallasey for the next year.

The club added: "Thank you for supporting our Book Sales in the Cherry Tree Centre, our Film Nights at the Light Cinema, our Race Evenings at the hotel, concerts and other events as they occur throughout the year.

"As you can see from the above we cannot run this big programme without your support. Thank you."
