A NEW film about Wilfred Owen has scooped up two awards at the LA Film Awards.

The Burying Party was awarded Best Narrative Feature and Best Cinematography at the ceremony and is up for six further nomination at an event in New York.

Due for general release late next year The Burying Party from Sine Wave Media will arrive in time for the 100 year anniversary of Wilfred’s death at the age of 25 on November 4, 1918.

The cast includes Andrew Caley (Peaky Blinders and Downton Abbey), Sid Phoenix as Siegfried Sassoon and Joyce Branagh who plays Wilfred’s mother Susan.

Taking the lead role of Wilfred will be Mathew Staite from Oxford.

Filming took place in Edinburgh, Wirral, Liverpool and North Yorkshire in September last year before war scenes were staged in specially prepared trenches in Suffolk and Wrexham.

The cellar of the Bombed Out Church on Leece Street was used to depict Wilfred Owen’s final bilet where he wrote his moving letter to his mother, Susan.

Director Richard Weston, from Wallasey said: “The casting was rigorous, and we needed a team that could carry the weight of such a powerful story.

“Wilfred Owen is a fascinating character who has never been truly realised.

“Dominic Hibberd’s biography is immensely important in underlining his sexuality, which had a huge influence on his work.

“These awards suggest that our premise has an international flavour and if we can, in some small way, export the work of such a great writer then we have reached a major objective.

“We are still crowd funding mainly to enter as many key festivals as we can and also to receive a rating from the Motion Picture Association of America.

“We have raised the £15,000 to make the film through crowd funding campaigns and through our own resources but now we need to put icing on the cake.”

The film will be released on November 4 and will have a special showing in Birkenhead.
