THE RSPCA has launched an investigation after a pigeon died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Wirral RSPCA inspector Lisa Lupson received a distraught call from a woman on Wednesday after she spotted the seriously injured bird in her garden in Moreton.

The woman reported the incident to local police as well as the RSPCA.

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, anyone who injures or kills a wild bird can face a fine of up to £5,000 and six months in prison.

Inspector Lupson said: “The woman spotted the bird perched in her garden and noticed it had a bullet hole in the chest and was bleeding.

“She contacted our emergency hotline straight away but, sadly, as she was giving us the information over the phone the pigeon collapsed and died.

Wirral Globe:

The pigeon suffered a severe injury to his chest

“I went to collect the bird’s body and there was a clear, severe injury in his chest.

“This poor bird must have been in a huge amount of pain and suffered a slow and agonising death.

“I made some enquiries in the local area and am keen to find out if anyone knows who may have been responsible for this awful act.

“Anyone with information which may help our investigation should get in touch by calling our appeal line on 0300 123 8018 and leave a message for me."
