A RECENT article in the Globe about the Ritz Theatre in Birkenhead and the following letter from Mark Lees, former cinema projectionist raised a great deal of interest.
Many people on Merseyside have fond memories about the Ritz.
In the case of the Ritz – known as 'The Showcase of the North' its success was down to the manager Mr Bill Boht – former husband of the actress Jean Boht, who starred in the TV series Bread.
Bill Boht staged skiffle contests for many years on Friday nights and one such featured Billy Fury.
Various variety shows were also featured at the Ritz.
There was also a Holiday Contest featuring local young ladies – your readers may remember these shows.
Both the Ritz and the Argyle Theatre, also in Birkenhead, are often mentioned on the Nostalgia evening hosted by Linda McDermott on BBC Radio Merseyside.
It's so sad that we do not have any such venues with the style of class that these venues had.
