Police are appealing for information after an object was dropped off a bridge over New Ferry Bypass earlier this month causing damage to a car driven by a pregnant woman.

At around 5.30pm on Wednesday, September 14, Hannah Mapp was driving her Vauxhall Corsa on the A41 towards Bromborough when she saw a group of around five schoolchildren holding a U-shaped orange and black object over a footbridge over the bypass.

As she drove closer to the bridge, the object was dropped hitting the bonnet of the car.

The shock made Hannah swerve, causing damage to the vehicle.

Neighbourhood inspector Kate Wilkinson said: "The sheer recklessness and stupidity of this incident is clear to see and I dread to think what might have happened to Hannah if the object had hit her windscreen.

"I would urge anyone in the community who has information to identify the offenders to do the right thing and come forward, as the consequences can be catastrophic.

"We are already doing lots of work with local schools to highlight the dangers of this behaviour, but I would also urge parents, guardians, teachers and friends of any schoolchildren around the area to help us spread this message."

CCTV inquiries are ongoing in the area.

Anyone with any information about this incident is urged to contact 101 quoting reference number 0516210056 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A 16-year-old boy was sentenced to four years' detention for manslaughter in 2005 after admitting dropping a car battery off the bridge at New Ferry Bypass in May 2004, causing the death of van driver Christopher McCaffrey from Moreton.
