A Wirral man who set himself the challenge of running 10 marathons in 10 days has crossed the finishing line.

The Globe has followed John Hammond throughout, having previously spoken to him before he left.

John who lives in Oxton completed his tenth in Talford on March 21.

He said: “It was very tough both mentally and physically.

“The pain in my toes was so severe I had to cut hole in my trainers to ease the pain.”

John chose to support CHIC, a charity which offers support to patients who have been diagnosed with Cancer and their families.

“Reading everyone’s comments and words before I left was a great help, it is amazing to see people supporting you.

“It was emotionally draining but there was never an option to quit.” he added.

Last year John ran seven marathons in seven days meaning his last three challenges were “unknown territory”.

After completing the first of his two marathons in Leeds, John travelled to Milton Keynes.

He explained arriving in Milton Keynes gave him a boast, as a lot of other runners were there.

“It was good to see everyone during the week, suffering with little problems, we all helped each other through the challenges.”

Although a target of £500 was orignally set, the fund raising page has received more than £2,500 in donations.

John added: “I can’t believe I have raised more than £2,500, seeing that amount came as a massive surprise as I only initially set the target as £500.

“People have been so generous- I even received a donation from someone in Australia.”

Before John started his marathons he was given a few words of warning which turned out to be accurate.

“The hardest thing was getting to the start line every morning.

“I was told before I started this challenge that this would be the hardest part and it turned out to be true.”

“As soon as I stopped running the pain would kick in, waking up every morning knowing I would be running another marathon was really difficult.”
