THOUSANDS have paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in Remembrance Sunday services across Wirral.

Leading the tributes at the Royal British Legion services was Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Les Rowlands.

He joined service men and women, their families and representatives of the armed forces at The Cenotaph in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, before heading to Thornton Hough’s memorial service.

He said: "There is always a fantastic turnout in Wirral and this year was no exception, despite what was terrible weather at times.

"I was honoured to be at Birkenhead Cenotaph and Thornton Hough war memorial. As well as the public and veterans, we welcomed active service men and woman, and also the families of some of those who have lost their lives in recent conflicts.

"It was very moving when the crowds applauded the families; it was a real heartfelt gesture.

"On Friday, I was also honoured to take part in a wreath laying ceremony remembering the victims of one of the worst maritime disasters of the 19th century, with Glenda Kitley, a representative of the tourism authority in South Africa where the tragedy took place. It was a great honour and an emotional moment."

There were also services at war memorials in Bebington, Eastham, Bromborough, Wallasey, and New Brighton, Moreton and Port Sunlight.

A remembrance service on Grange Hill in West Kirby was followed by a parade into the town.

Cllr Rowlands continued: "In every generation there are service men and women who bravely put themselves in harm’s way to protect the values that we as a country hold dear.

"It is of the utmost importance to members of the armed forces and their families that we celebrate their heroism.”
