WIRRAL'S next generation of voters took to the polls today as pupils from Bebington High Sports College held their own mock General Election.

Ballot boxes were made and placed in each form room where students and staff cast their vote for one of the five main parties in a mock poll.

In total 95% of the students voted. The event was organised by Maths department.

A school representative said: "Each student will one day become a voter therefore it is good to raise awareness of politics from an early age so young people have more understanding."

When the votes were counted, Labour came first with 61% of the ballot.

Ukip were second with 13% while both the Conservatives and the Green Party each recorded 12%.

Liberal Democrats came last with just 2%, possibly reflecting students’ thoughts on the unpopular decision to increase university tuition fees to £9,000.

Based on the classroom constituencies, Labour gained 26 seats giving them an overall majority government.
