Tim Burton created a magical Gothic masterpiece with the fairy tale film Edward Scissorhands.

One off my all time favourite movie experiences.

So how can you beat that?

Well you don't. You equal it.

Matthew Bourne, director and dance dynamo, produces a wonderful event at the Liverpool Empire where you can't help but love the central character and those who try and help him in mid-50s America.

Edward is born without hands and lives in a far away place, but the locals take to him and his skills with scissors.

He can cut hair and hedges. He is top of the topiary pops.

Ed is an outsider, but they let him in to their shallow existences.

It is Happy Days meets Hairspray - but not a word is spoken.

The atmosphere speaks volumes.

This is a ballet- but not quite. It is dance, comedy, pathos and joy in one wonderful, two-hour ensemble piece.

Scenery, music and fautless choreography make this one of the most enchanting shows ever to visit Liverpool.

A boy who has scissors for hands and who falls in love and is loved back is the stuff of dreams.

That's what happens.

What occurs on the magnificent sets of the Empire is there for you to see, enjoy and relish.

Edward Scissorhands is a ten-out-of-ten experience.

Dominic North as Ed and Ashley Shaw as Kim Boggs shine throughout every sequence directed by Mr Bourne.

And what a cast, plus Danny Elfman's original music is fautless.

No savage cuts here. A cinematic great recreated with sparkling special effects.

Globe rating: 10/10  A modern classic.

For tickets call the Empire: 08448 713 017.

This show runs until this Saturday.
